Condom Promotion

Consistent and correct use of condoms can significantly reduce the rate of STDs and HIV infection. Good quality condoms must be easily accessible and affordable for as many people as possible, also at village level. In addition to the distribution of condoms at health facilities free of charge, the social marketing of condoms is an essential component of condom promotion.

TGPSH collaborates with PSI by identifying wholesalers, NGOs and condom distribution points down to ward level and by piloting a collaboration of village bicycle agents and community based distributors. Condom promotion is part of all activities carried out at community level. A monitoring system for condom distribution has been introduced to allow easy follow up of problems arising and indicate behavioural change.

Material for condom promotion has been developed and is also available for download: leaflet on how to use a condom and for adolescents should be accessible here in both English and Swahili. Other IEC materials available are booklets of questions and answers about condoms in both English and Swahili (Swahili main text and Swahili cover page only).

TGPSH and PSI developed a series of presentations on condom topics, which were discussed during meetings with staff, decision-makers at Regional , and District level and to  the Parliamentarian Standing Committee for AIDS as well as health professionals, and a training of trainers was organized for regional representatives. These presentations are available for download:

You can also access the presentations as pdf -file for use on overhead projector:

Condoms prevent unwanted pregnancies as well as transmission of HIV. Therefore, knoweldge about condoms is important for people working in the fields of both HIV-prevention and family planning. For more about the challenges of integrating these information see the document "HIV /AIDS prevention and family planning programmes. Let us talk about condoms"
