Zonal Health Training Institutes

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) currently provides specific health worker training through its eight Zonal Training Centres (ZTCs) / Zonal Health Training Institutes (ZHTIs) around the country. The ZTCs/ZHTIs support the district, regional and national needs sector in promoting both improved health intervention delivery as well as strengthening the district health system. They offer continuing education, in-service training and distance learning and they oversee the training of Health Sector Reform related issues. Generally, the ZTCs/ZHTIs have a pivotal role for the human resources development in the health sector.

TGPSH works with all eight ZTCs/ZHTIs in Arusha, Iringa, Morogoro, Kigoma, Mwanza, Dodoma, Mbeya and Mtwara. An inventory of training capacities, gaps and infrastructure has been endeavoured to assess whether the different ZTCs/ZHTIs are in a position to provide the foundation and core modules of the modular district management course. Additionally, they will further specialise on optional training topics according to their respective expertise. Curriculum development, training of trainers in teaching methodology, establishing network structures for exchange of experience, best practices, curricula, training material and, finally, developing human resources and infrastructure for e-learning are the focus of TGPSH activities.

Particular attention is given to further develop the capacity of ZTCs/ZHTIs in Mbeya and Mtwara. TGPSH supports those institutes in developing and implementing a business plan, provides equipment, set up a library, and assists with technical support and advice.
