Home based care (HBC)

Patients with AIDS, and opportunistic infections due to HIV, occupy sometimes 50% or more of beds in hospitals which are already functioning with limited resources. Home-based-care (HBC) is one way of reducing the bed occupancy rate due to this disease as well as giving continuous support to the infected persons and their families. This task is taken care of by both NGO- and hospital-based service providers.

The service providers advise family members on how to care for their sick relatives at home using materials available locally and very important without infecting themselves. HBC also offers the opportunity to address the neighbors, increase the acceptance of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWA) and even mobilize the community to support affected families.
