Adjacent Projects
These are ongoing projects which are not really devised as main functions or activities of the Component.
The need for establishing these projects functioning as sub components within the Multisectoral AIDS Control Component has been prioritized due to various health issues of concern that needed immediate action, such as:
- The risk of transmission from mother to child is about 30%, with the highest risk of infection being at the time of birth. The project to Prevent Mother to Child Transmission was set up as a pilot in Mbeya Region, for more information see PMTCT project also see PMTCT leaflet
- The impact of HIV/AIDS on national economies is severe, thus claiming the productive workforce in most organizations. Concerted efforts have been made by GTZ, AIDS Control In Companies in Africa (ACCA) in collaboration with International firms to develop work place programmes as an intervention measure, see detailed information under ACCA.
- The management of treatment, care and capacity building of health workers are a prerequisite for the successful implementation of ART and of the National Care and Treatment plan. It is on this basis that the project Capacity Building of Health workers for ARV treatment was established. In addition, the Component has developed in partnership with TACAIDS, MoH and University of Heidelberg/evaplan a curriculum to train the Council Multisectoral AIDS Committees "CMACs" (who are in each district in Tanzania), to facilitate their routine activities and better support the community.
- The young and reproductive age group of 15-19, who are in secondary schools are the most affected by the pandemic. Therefore, the necessity of educating the youth to be able to make informed decisions about their lifestyle has been given priority. A pilot project PASHA - "Prevention and Awareness at Schools of HIV/AIDS" SESS - "Science Education in Secondary Schools Project" has been established as an approach to combat the problem.
