The Health Information System

Planning and decision making is not possible without sound data. Consequently, an extensive health management information system has been developed in Tanzania and a lot of funds and training have been invested in this system.

This information system provides the decision makers with the necessary data. It is however to be highlighted that this information system did not succeed in harmonising the needs of districts' decision makers with the needs of those running vertical programmes.

Consequently, vertical programmes are always tempted to introduce parallel systems, which obviously increase the workload for the staff.

The component gives support to the regions and to the districts in order to promote computerisation of the health system which thus facilitates the use of modern in order to use modern technology to gain better and more reliable data. This support enables at least all districts in Tanga Region to collect, proceed and analyse their data and to compare them.

During an annual meeting all districts within the region get together to discuss the data, identify trends and draw appropriate lessons for better planning.
